VOLUME Website Re-design

VOLUME is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Kuala Lumpur that aims to connect volunteers looking for volunteering opportunities and organisations requiring manpower. Its website is thus vital for the organisation as it is the one-stop site for the organisation's audience to seek information about volunteering opportunities. A few years ago, I had worked on creating the website in a team of 5, using Notion's web-sharing feature. To do this, the team identified key information that is required for the website and conducted thorough user testing before officially launching the Notion website. This existing website can be accessed here.

Recently, I decided to pick up the website again and give it a new look through a redesign. I identified a few issues with the site and decided to build a prototype with Figma.

Issues

Reflecting on the design of the current website, I found some room for improvement:

1. Information Architecture
Given the focus of the NGO and the website to display up-to-date and essential information for various volunteering opportunities for the benefit of volunteers seeking new opportunities, I thought the 'Volunteer Now' page should be given more emphasis. The tab should be prioritised before the 'About Us' page and should draw more attention in the home page.

2. Interactivity
As Notion does not support animations or transitions, the existing website is rather static and does not attract much attention to parts that should be emphasised. The lack of efficient navigation buttons and linking within pages may also make it more difficult for users when navigating the pages to look for what they need.

3. Visual Design

Again, owing to Notion's restrictions, the website relies a lot on plugins and images, which are fixed design elements that may be difficult to edit. Most texts and paragraphs lack designs and some have an unnecessary amount of white spaces that make paragraphs difficult to read. The brand's colour scheme is also rarely incorporated.

Interactive Prototype

This is still a work in progress so I will update it from time to time!
